CHAMA MAN WANTED OVER ALLEGED RAPE OF WOMAN AFTER BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Police in Chama District of Eastern Province have launched a manhunt for a man accused of raping a 20-year-old woman who was asleep after attending a birthday celebration.
According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, the incident occurred on June 5, 2026, in Makeni B Compound, Chama District.
Police reports indicate that the victim had attended her elder sister’s birthday celebration on the evening of June 4. The gathering reportedly started around 18:00 hours and continued into the early hours of June 5.
After spending the night at the celebration, the woman is believed to have fallen asleep in the living room of the house.
It is alleged that at around 08:00 hours, a man identified as Isungeni Zimba visited the residence after missing the birthday celebrations and intending to eat leftover food.
However, instead of carrying out his intended visit, the suspect allegedly found the victim asleep and sexually assaulted her.
Police say the victim woke up during the alleged attack and recognized the suspect. She reportedly attempted to raise an alarm, but the suspect allegedly covered her mouth and continued the assault.
The victim is said to have fought back until the suspect fled from the scene.
Mr. Mweemba said the matter was reported to Chama Police Station at approximately 16:00 hours on the same day, and investigations were immediately launched.
Police have since intensified efforts to locate and apprehend the suspect, who remains at large.
Authorities have urged members of the public with information on the suspect’s whereabouts to report to the nearest police station.
