UNOPPOSED CANDIDATES : A new phenomenon

UNOPPOSED CANDIDATES : A new phenomenon

By Patrick Mukosha – Lusaka

Eemergence of unopposed candidates at both parliamentary and local government level is not a sign of dictatorship, as some would want to claim — it is a reflection of a thriving democracy under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema and the New Dawn administration.

For the first time in Zambia’s democratic history, political competition has become so intense that in certain areas, opposition parties have simply failed to present candidates capable of matching the confidence and support enjoyed by the UPND.

This unprecedented development speaks volumes about the success of the UPND government’s policies, governance style, and commitment to opening democratic space.

Under previous administrations, political violence, intimidation, and restrictions on freedoms were common headlines.

Today, political parties are free to organize, campaign, and participate in elections without fear.

The democratic environment has expanded, and the Zambian people are freely making their choices.

What we are witnessing is not the death of democracy, but the political consequences of performance.

Citizens are rewarding leaders who have delivered economic stability, free education, infrastructure development, and restored international confidence in Zambia.

Where the opposition has failed to organize itself, recruit credible candidates, or connect with the people, they cannot blame the UPND for their own weaknesses.

Instead of complaining, the opposition must go back to the drawing board, rebuild their structures, and offer meaningful alternatives to the people.

Politics is about persuasion, hard work, and vision — not entitlement.

If they cannot compete effectively, then perhaps the best option is to join the progressive movement that is transforming Zambia under President HH.

The New Dawn government has proven that democracy flourishes best where peace, freedom, and development exist together.

Zambia is witnessing a new political era — one where the people themselves are deciding who deserves leadership, without coercion or confusion.

Salt sana.
