MK Party’s Push To Remove President Cyril Ramaphosa Is Being Seen By Many South Africans As Political Revenge For What Happened To Former President Jacob Zuma

The growing pressure from the MK Party demanding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s resignation over the Phala Phala scandal is now being viewed by many South Africans as more than just a fight about accountability.

Political tensions between supporters of Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa have been building for years inside the ANC, especially after Zuma was forced to step down as President in 2018 during the height of State Capture allegations and growing public pressure.

Many Zuma supporters believe Ramaphosa’s rise to power came at Zuma’s political expense, especially after several Zuma allies lost influence in government, corruption investigations intensified, and Zuma himself later went to prison after refusing to appear before the Zondo Commission.

Now, following the Constitutional Court ruling linked to the Phala Phala matter, MK Party supporters believe the political tables are finally turning against Ramaphosa.

The party has intensified calls for impeachment proceedings and resignation, arguing that no leader should be above constitutional accountability.

However, many political observers believe there is also a strong emotional and political revenge element involved because of the long-standing factional battles between Zuma and Ramaphosa supporters inside the ANC.

Ramaphosa supporters, on the other hand, argue that the President has not been convicted of any crime and accuse opposition groups of using the Phala Phala matter to weaken him politically ahead of future elections.

The growing political battle is now exposing deep divisions not only inside the ANC, but also across South African politics as parties position themselves for future power struggles.
