M’MEMBE DENOUNCES GOVERNMENT REPRESSION
…urges Zambians to remain resolute
Lusaka… Wednesday May 21, 2025 – Socialist Party (SP) President Dr. Fred M’membe has condemned the rising tide of political repression and democratic backsliding in Zambia.
In a statement, Dr. M’membe declared that the country was at crossroads, warning that the decisions made during this period would shape Zambia’s national identity for generations to come.

He stated that the country was witnessing an increase in politically motivated arrests, a weaponized judicial system, and a deliberate stifling of democratic space.
He criticized the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Laws, contending that they were being used as tools to suppress dissent.
Dr. M’membe noted that the freedoms of speech, protest, and assembly were under siege by a ruling elite intent on silencing opposition and maintaining power through repressive means.
Meanwhile, Dr. M’membe called on Zambians not to lose hope, assuring them that the Socialist Party stood in solidarity with all who sought justice and dignity.
He specifically mentioned support for young people whose voices were being silenced, opposition members facing harassment and imprisonment, and civil society groups denied the right to peaceful protest.
Dr. M’membe also voiced concern for workers, emphasizing that they were being neglected while Mr. Hakainde Hichilema and the ruling UPND focused on political campaigns for the 2026 elections.
“No amount of repression can bury the will of the people,” he said, asserting that Zambians had endured and fought for democracy before and were prepared to do so again — not through violence, but through truth, unity, and courage.
He urged citizens to remain fearless in speaking out, to resist intimidation, and to reject division based on political affiliation.
Emphasizing national unity, Dr. M’membe called on members of all parties — UPND, PF, SP, and all citizens – to remember that they are one people and one nation.
He concluded with a call for vigilance and unity, reminding the public that history and future generations were watching.
“Let them not inherit a nation that gave up,” he said, affirming that victory belongs to those who never stop believing in justice.
