3 CHILDREN AMONG 5 WHO DROWNED IN LAKE BANGWEULU

Five people among them three children and two adults have drowned after two boats capsised on lake Bangweulu in Samfya district after a heavy storm.

The passengers of the two boats that were following each other were travelling to Chilubi district.

The incident happened around 12 hours on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the incident through a statement stating 26 victims of the accident involving both boats were rescued by onlookers from another boat trailling behind.

Hamoonga said the first boat which had 15 passengers on board had no casualties while 11 survived from the second boat which recorded casualties.

He revealed that the casualties have been identified and the bodies have been transferred to Samfya district hospital mortuary where the survivors are also receiving treatment.

“The two boats, along with their marine engines, have not yet been retrieved. The survivors are currently receiving treatment at Samfya District Hospital,” stated Hamoonga.

“Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
