ZIMBA TO RECEIVE FRA MAIZE AND EAGLES’ MEALIEMEAL FOR COMMUNITY SALES, ANNOUNCES MAPATIZYA MP

Mapatizya Member of Parliament Emelda Munashabantu has facilitated an arrangement between the Food Reserve Agency and the Zambia National Service to supply the community with cheap bags of maize and mealie meal.

The goal is to enable entrepreneurs to order mealie meal for resale at more affordable prices, benefiting the people across the district.

During her ongoing tour of the constituency, which includes visits to Zimba ,Chidi and Chalimongela wards in Mapatizya Constituency, Honourable Munashabantu revealed that the government will distribute 150 metric tonnes of maize to all satellite depots for community sales.

The MP also disclosed that an additional 1000 bags of EAGLES Mealie meal will be made available at a wholesale price through the constituency office, specifically for local entrepreneurs, adding that this strategic distribution will occur on a weekly basis, allowing citizens to purchase essential food items within their own community.

She said the initiative responds to the anticipated famine resulting from the prolonged dry spell, which severely impacted crop yields in the district and prompted President Hakainde Hichilema to declare a national disaster.

“We have a responsive government, and my office advocated for local sales of both maize and mealie meal to alleviate the challenges faced by our people who would otherwise need to travel long distances,” stated Munashabantu.

She expressed optimism that soon all satellite depots would stock maize for community sales, streamlining access for businesses that wish to procure directly from the Zambia National Service (ZNS).

Furthermore, Munashabantu encouraged small-scale entrepreneurs, women’s clubs, cooperatives, and companies to capitalize on the availability of ZNS mealie meal and stock their shops to contribute to the well-being of the community while also generating profits.

“The distribution of mealie meal by ZNS will allow local businesses to purchase at wholesale prices and subsequently sell to residents at reasonable rates. I am genuinely proud of our government’s commitment to addressing local needs,” she affirmed.

And Honourable Munashabantu has revealed that the government will soon initiate a relief food program for citizens who are not covered by any existing social protection programs to address the nutritional needs of vulnerable individuals in the community.

She has expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Mapatizya to the government for heeding their concerns regarding accessibility to essential food items by ensuring that mealie meal and maize are available locally, for citizens not to undertake long journeys to procure these staples.

Hon. Munashabantu emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Our government’s commitment to meeting the needs of our citizens is commendable. By providing relief food and supporting local businesses, we ensure that no one goes hungry during challenging times. This proactive approach demonstrates the government’s responsiveness and dedication to the well-being of its people.”

The government will stock FRA maize at various satellite depots across the Zimba district, including Misika, Chinkoyo, Luyaba, Simalundu, Muzya, Kanyanga, and Siamafumba. These strategic locations will facilitate community sales, benefiting both residents and local entrepreneurs.
