ZAMBIAN LEADERS MUST PUT PEOPLE BEFORE POLITICS – ACTIVIST
Luapula based Governance Activist Naran Bwanga Mwandu has urged leaders in the country to prioritise the plight of citizens before politics.
Mwandu says Zambia has come a long way since gaining independence in 1964, but its political journey has often prioritised the preservation of power over improving citizens’ lives.
He states that successive governments, from UNIP to the present administration, have consistently placed politics above the welfare and development of the people.
Mwandu explains that constitutional amendments are frequently rushed to secure political advantage, while pressing challenges such as the high cost of living, youth unemployment, inadequate healthcare and an ailing education system are neglected.
He finds it disheartening that national efforts focus more on benefiting politicians rather than uplifting ordinary Zambians.
Mwandu observes that leaders appear to forget that power is temporary and lent to them by the people, making it essential for them to use it responsibly and accountably.
The Governance Activist warns that when those in government prioritise holding onto power over serving the people, the entire nation suffers, adding that Zambia cannot afford to continue on this path.
He argues that Zambia does not lack resources or talent, but rather the political will to put the people first.
Mwandu insists that it is time to shift away from politics of self-preservation towards politics of service.
He affirms that the constitution should safeguard the people rather than the privileged, particularly politicians.
Mwandu emphasises that the country’s future depends on courageous citizens, civil society and new-generation leaders demanding better governance.
He asserts that the standard must be raised and that Zambians must never again accept politics as usual while citizens continue to struggle.
