Zambia Must Never Witness Another Political Tragedy Like Chilangwa’s. Politics is About Development!

While Chilangwa introduced the Luapula Expo, an act that exemplifies what politics should be about, his enemies have introduced the Cyber Security Laws!

Lusaka, May 22 – The heartbreaking image of incarcerated Kawambwa Central MP Hon. Nixon Chilangwa viewing the body of his deceased wife – a woman he left alive and supportive before being imprisoned – should haunt the conscience of every Zambian.

This is not democracy. It is a tragic portrait of a nation where political rivalry has crossed the bounds of humanity. Even the security officer beside him couldn’t hold back the grief as Chilangwa consoled his daughter at the funeral. Such moments must never be repeated in our political history.

Politics should never be reduced to a weapon of self-preservation or vengeance. Its purpose is to serve as a platform for competing ideas and developmental strategies, where those with the best solutions earn the mandate to govern.

Sadly, in today’s Zambia, some prefer to silence or destroy their political opponents rather than engage in the battle of ideas. Instead of embracing those with proven developmental contributions, such as Hon. Chilangwa who championed the Luapula Expo, his political detractors have chosen to focus their time and energies on pushing forward suppressive policies like the Cyber Security Laws.

Zambia must rise above this culture of political vindictiveness. The death of Chilangwa’s wife under such circumstances is a chilling reminder of what happens when politics strays from its true purpose. We must reclaim our democratic values and ensure that no family pays such a heavy price for one’s service to the nation. Politics must return to its rightful role – as a vehicle for development, not destruction.
