Zambia Imports 550MW, Exports Only 80MW – Energy Minister
ENERGY Minister Makozo Chikote has revealed that Zambia is currently importing approximately 550 megawatts (MW) of electricity while exporting only 80MW.
Speaking on Diamond TV on Monday, Chikote explained that the imports were sourced through the Southern African Power Pool, mainly from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
“First, I will start by explaining that we are currently importing about 550 megawatts from the Southern Pool Market. This is via South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. As I am talking to you, we are exporting only 80 megawatts to Namibia,” he stated.
When asked about the country’s current power deficit, Chikote estimated it to be around 1,600MW.
