THE NEW HERITAGE PARTY WEIGHS IN ON ECL’S ELIGIBILITY CASE: IT IS A DOUBLE-£DGED SW0RD

Divergent views have continued being shared as the country is just hours away from witnessing the Constitutional Court render in the eligibility case of former president Edgar Lungu.

The New Heritage Party (NHP) is amongst the parties that have added their voice to the burning issue.

In a statement, NHP Chief Spokesperson Aggephrey Brill said the verdict is a double-£dged sw0rd, poised to disadvantage either ECL or the ruling UPND regardless of the outcome.

Brill said the judicial verdict serves as a litmus test, scrutinizing the Zambian judiciary’s independence from the ruling party and the executive branch of government.

“In essence, tomorrow’s judgment is a watershed moment, separating the wheat from the chaff. It will reveal the true extent of Zambia’s commitment to the separation of powers and the rule of law. As a nation, we stand at the crossroads, where the path chosen will have far-reaching consequences,” read a statement.

“The Constitutional Court must prove its mettle, demonstrating its belief in the finality of judgments. This is a moment of truth, where the judiciary must show its independence and impartiality. The judiciary’s credibility hangs in the balance.”

The Party Chief Spokesperson stressed the need for the judiciary to rise to the challenge, ensuring that justice is served and the rule of law is upheld.

“The nation watches with bated breath, awaiting a verdict that will shape Zambia’s future,” read the statement.
