The “Cows” Government: A Herd That Can’t Mooooo to Save Suffering Zambians A Grim Reality Check Since 2021

By Thandiwe Ketis Ngoma

When the “cows” took the reins of government in 2021, they rode in on a wave of promises—economic stability, prosperity for all, and a new era of inclusivity. But promises mean little without action, and three years later, the nation is buckling under the weight of an administration seemingly incapable of addressing the challenges it vowed to resolve. The evidence is damning, and the suffering of citizens is undeniable. Here’s a hard-hitting assessment of their failures:

1. Never-Ending Load Shedding

Electricity is the lifeblood of any economy, yet the “cows” have presided over one of the darkest periods in the nation’s history—literally. Load shedding has crippled businesses, disrupted daily life, and eroded investor confidence. Industries are shutting down, productivity is falling, and citizens are left groping in the dark—both figuratively and literally.

2. Mealie Meal Becomes a Luxury

What was once a staple food for all is now out of reach for many. The price of mealie meal has surged to K350, creating a food crisis that threatens the very fabric of society. Families are skipping meals, hunger is rising, and the government offers no relief.

3. Fuel Prices Out of Control

The cost of fuel has skyrocketed to K32 per liter, sending shockwaves through the economy. This isn’t just about filling tanks; it’s about the ripple effects on transportation, goods, and services. Every sector feels the pinch, and every citizen bears the burden.

4. Kwacha Collapse

Under this administration, the national currency has depreciated to an alarming K28 against the dollar, eroding savings, raising the cost of imports, and shaking investor confidence. The kwacha’s collapse is a glaring symbol of economic mismanagement and lack of foresight.

5. Kagem Mine Closure

The shutdown of Kagem Mine, a cornerstone of the mining sector, is a devastating blow. Jobs have been lost, revenue streams have dried up, and one of the nation’s greatest assets lies dormant. The closure highlights the government’s inability to create an environment conducive to economic growth.

6. Basic Commodities Out of Reach

From bread priced at K24 per loaf to a food basket costing K10,880, the cost of living has become unbearable. These figures are more than statistics—they represent the daily struggles of millions who can no longer afford the basics.

7. Economic Freefall: GDP and Inflation

GDP has contracted by 1.2%, signaling a shrinking economy and a lack of growth opportunities. Inflation has soared to 16%, eroding purchasing power and plunging more families into poverty.

The government’s inability to manage these core indicators paints a picture of economic incompetence.

8. Dubious Financial Transactions

Zesco’s transfer of $84 million to China is a glaring example of mismanagement and misplaced priorities. While citizens suffer, the government’s financial dealings raise serious questions about transparency and accountability.

9. Transportation Costs Crush Workers and Businesses

Rising fuel prices have led to sharp increases in transportation fares, further squeezing households and businesses. From workers struggling to commute to businesses unable to move goods, the impact is crippling.

10. Unemployment and Poverty Spiral

Instead of creating jobs, unemployment has surged, and poverty is at an all-time high. This administration’s failure to foster a thriving economy has left millions in despair, struggling to survive day by day.

11. Democratic Decay

The “cows” have presided over the shrinking of democratic space, with opposition figures frequently arrested and dissent stifled. What began as a promise of inclusivity has devolved into an era of authoritarianism, where voices of dissent are silenced.

12. Collapsing Local Businesses

Local businesses, the backbone of the economy, are shutting down under the strain of high costs and low demand. Entrepreneurs are losing their livelihoods, and the knock-on effect on employment and the economy is devastating.

A Nation in Crisis

This is no longer about missed opportunities; it’s about a government failing its people at every level. From an economy in tatters to a society burdened by poverty, despair, and oppression, the legacy of the “cows” government is one of failure, incompetence, and betrayal.

Conclusion: Time for Accountability

The “cows” have squandered the trust placed in them by the people. The hardships facing citizens today—rising costs, unemployment, and a collapsing economy—are the direct result of their mismanagement. Despite their loud promises, it is clear that the “cows” cannot “moo” in ways that benefit the nation.

They have failed to provide meaningful solutions, leaving the country in a worse state than they found it. The call for accountability is deafening, and the people deserve better. It’s time for this administration to step aside and make way for those who can genuinely work for the suffering Zambians, restore hope, and lead the nation toward the prosperity it so desperately needs.
