“TE$TICLE TAKEN, JUSTICE SHAKEN”: A DRAMATIC TALE OF CRIME, CHAOS, AND COMMUNITY OUTRAGE

In a bizarre twist of fate, a 19-year-old accused criminal from Dambwa Site and Service found himself on the receiving end of both the law and community frustration—losing not only his freedom but also one of his testicles in the process.

Joshua Njovu, whose alleged escapades include burglary, theft, and being a general menace to society, became the unfortunate star of this dark comedy of errors that spiraled out of control.

The saga began with a simple burglary case: a local man reported a break-in, with thieves making off with goods worth K13,500. Police and the neighborhood watch soon zeroed in on Njovu and his two partners in crime. But this wasn’t your usual arrest—it had all the makings of a low-budget action movie.

After being handcuffed and escorted to his home, Njovu decided to pull off a Houdini act, leaping out of the police vehicle and bolting toward Linda Compound, handcuffs and all. If the Olympics had a “criminal escape” category, Njovu would’ve snagged gold.

His freedom was short-lived. Three kilometers later, the community cornered him like a rat in a kitchen. What followed was a beating so fierce that it left Njovu with what doctors at Livingstone Teaching Hospital (LTH) politely described as “irreparable damage” to one of his crown jewels. The result? Emergency surgery and a permanent downgrade to a single testicle.

Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka, while addressing the incident, said, “It’s regrettable that community members took the law into their own hands. Justice isn’t served by removing a suspect’s… appendages.”

Meanwhile, locals in Dambwa couldn’t resist weighing in. “Honestly, this guy has been terrorizing us for ages,” said one resident. “We didn’t mean to turn him into a one-ball bandit, but enough is enough!”

While Njovu recovers under police custody (and adjusts to his new anatomy), this incident shines a spotlight on the thin line between justice and chaos. Mob justice, while tempting for many, has repeatedly shown its brutal consequences.

As one witty commentator put it, “Let’s hope the next time a suspect is caught, the community leaves the punishing to the courts—and the family jewels intact.”
