TAXI DRIVER DIES AFTER VICIOUS ATTACK BY CRIMINALS

A forty – two year old taxi driver identified as Peter Malama from Mtendere has died after a vicious attack by unknown criminals.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has confirmed that Mtendere Police Station, through the Kalikiliki Police Post, received a distressing report on February 01, 2024 at 00:20 hours from Charles Mwila, aged 43, residing at Six Miles who informed the police that he, along with a taxi driver Mr. Peter Malama, aged 42 and three other family members, fell victim to a vicious attack by unknown criminals.

Mr Hamoonga has disclosed that the incident took place on January 31, 2024 at around 23:40 hours in Kalikiliki compound.

“According to the preliminary investigation, on the mentioned date and time, Mr. Mwila and his family members hired a grey Toyota Allion with Registration Number BAA 6242 from Kalingalinga. The purpose of the trip was a family meeting in Kalikiliki compound,” narrated Mr Hamoonga.

“As they approached Kalikiliki Market, their vehicle was obstructed by a young boy, and suddenly, a group of criminals, masked in black face masks, emerged.”

He said some brandished machetes while others pelted the vehicle with stones.

“The criminals overpowered the passengers, assaulting them with offensive weapons, and proceeded to rob them of their phones and other valuables. The total value of the stolen items is yet to be determined,” he added.

“The victims, including the driver identified as Mr. Peter Malama, aged 42, from Mtendere East, and were swiftly transported to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital. Regrettably, Mr. Malama succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead upon admission.”

Mr Hamoonga indicated that the deceased is currently at the hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem, examination and subsequent burial arrangements.

“The vehicle involved, fortunately, was not stolen and was brought to the Police Post by a Good Samaritan. As of now, no arrests have been made, and none of the stolen items have been recovered,” he stated.

“The police are actively conducting investigations into this heinous crime. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. The Zambia Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and assures the public that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
