Tasila Lungu Responds to DEC Briefing, Criticizes Zambian Justice System and Political Climate
Tasila Lungu, the Member of Parliament for Chawama, has publicly responded to recent remarks made by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in a press briefing on December 24, expressing disappointment and raising concerns about the state of Zambia’s justice system.
In her statement shared on social media, Lungu explained that she is currently on medical leave, having sought permission from Parliament. She emphasized that, as a first-time mother, this period has been a time of blessing despite the health challenges she and her family are facing.
However, Lungu’s message quickly turned to her discontent with the DEC’s recent actions. She expressed surprise upon learning about the content of the DEC’s press briefing, which involved discussions related to her. Lungu reiterated her commitment to cooperating with the DEC but criticized what she perceived as a lack of fairness in the way justice is being applied.
“I have always cooperated with the DEC and its officers, who often work in challenging environments,” Lungu wrote. “I was surprised and deeply disappointed to learn through social media about the press briefing held by the DEC on December 24th.” She went on to stress that her concerns were rooted in what she feels is the growing partiality in the application of justice, which, she argued, undermines public trust in Zambia’s judicial and electoral systems.
Lungu also took the opportunity to comment on the broader political climate in Zambia. She warned against the erosion of confidence in the country’s governance institutions, including the Executive, Judiciary, and Legislature. She highlighted the importance of maintaining the separation of powers, expressing concern that the political environment could become increasingly polarized, leading to inefficiency and the wasting of public resources.
While acknowledging the challenges facing the nation, Lungu reminded her constituents that Parliament is currently on recess and she would be available once Parliament reconvenes. She encouraged her supporters to continue reaching out to her through her work line for any urgent matters, assuring them that she looks forward to resuming her duties and addressing the needs of her constituency in the coming months.
In closing, Lungu extended heartfelt Christmas and New Year wishes to her constituents, expressing gratitude for their continued support and promising to be there for them in the months ahead.
