SCHOOLS REMAIN SHUTDOWN UP TO JANUARY 29 AFTER 128 DIE OF CHOLERA – GOVT
THE Ministry of Education has rescheduled the reopening of schools in the country to 29th January, 2024 as opposed to 8th January.
The decision follows a statement released by the Ministry of Health on 14th December, 2023, to the effect that the country has seen an increase in cases of cholera and subsequent deaths.
Speaking during a Press briefing in Lusaka, Thursday, Minister of Education, Douglas Siakalima, said as part of government measures to combat the cholera outbreak, public, private and community schools will remain closed for three more weeks.
He stated that government is concerned with the negative impact of the pandemic, hence the decision to safeguard the lives of school going pupils.
The Minister advised parents and guardians to prepare for term two as the school holiday for term one will be a week as opposed to a month so as to catch up for lost time.
As at 3rd January, 2024, the death toll from the current cholera outbreak in the country stood at 128, with 3,757 cumulative cases.
