PRESSURE MOUNTS. EFZ CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF PASTOR DUNCAN SIMUCHIMBA

…describing him as a passionate advocate for justice and a defender of the poor

The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) has called for the unconditional release of Kitwe-based clergyman Pastor Duncan Daniel Simuchimba, who was recently sentenced to nine (9) months with hard labour for unlawful assembly.

In a statement issued by Bishop Andrew Mwenda, the EFZ expressed deep sadness over the conviction, which they believe may have been politically motivated.

Pastor Simuchimba’s sentencing has sparked speculation, with many suggesting it is linked to his public criticism of the demolition of market stalls at Chisokone Market.

The EFZ described the pastor as a passionate advocate for justice and a defender of the poor, particularly market vendors who have been affected by the demolitions.

Bishop Mwenda noted that while the government’s fight against cholera on the Copperbelt Province is essential, demolishing market stalls in the current economic climate could worsen the hardships faced by many Zambians.

He urged the authorities to listen to differing opinions and work collaboratively for the benefit of all citizens.

The EFZ acknowledged that Pastor Simuchimba and his church are not formally registered members of the fellowship but recognized his strong evangelical and Pentecostal beliefs.

Citing biblical principles, the EFZ emphasized the need for true justice and impartiality, quoting Deuteronomy 16:19: “Do not twist justice or show partiality.”

Bishop Mwenda clarified that their call for Pastor Simuchimba’s release was not an endorsement of lawlessness but rather an appeal to weigh the pastor’s positive contributions to society against his alleged wrongdoing.

The EFZ joined other voices in advocating for the immediate and unconditional release of Pastor Simuchimba, reaffirming their support for the clergyman’s work in defending justice and speaking up for the vulnerable.

“EFZ stands with Pastor Duncan Simuchimba and urges the government to show compassion and fairness in addressing this matter,” the statement concluded.

The conviction has fueled a national conversation about freedom of expression and justice, with many Zambians awaiting the government’s response to the growing calls for the pastor’s release.
