PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA TO ATTEND THE 38TH AFRICAN UNION SUMMIT IN ETHIOPIA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation wishes to inform the nation that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia will attend the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, scheduled for 15th to 16th February 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Assembly, the African Union’s highest decision-making body, will convene under the theme: Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.  This theme highlights the African Union’s commitment to addressing historical injustices, including the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and systemic discrimination, while advancing reparations and justice for people of African Descent globally. Discussions will focus on critical issues including African Union Institutional Reforms, the African Continental Free Trade Area, peace and security, and Africa’s engagement in the G20. The Assembly will also consider reports from various high-level committees, including the Committee of 10 Heads of State on the reform of the United Nations Security Council, the AUDA-NEPAD Heads of State Orientation Committee, and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Forum.

While in Ethiopia, President Hichilema will participate in key meetings, including the APRM Summit and the High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Financing in Africa. Additionally, the President will hold strategic bilateral meetings on matters of mutual interest to advance Zambia’s national and economic priorities.

President Hichilema’s participation underscores Zambia’s commitment to advancing continental objectives such as economic integration, sustainable development, and peace, and security. The President’s engagements at the Summit are aligned with Zambia’s economic transformation agenda and efforts to strengthen regional and global cooperation.

The Summit is preceded by the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council (Session of Ministers) of the African Union, held from 12th to 13th February 2025.
The President is expected to return to Zambia immediately after concluding his engagements.
