As you may recall, in September last year, a story went viral about a retired police officer who was in the process of arranging his funeral before passing away.
Mzee Sabasita, the father of Tanzanian artist Tunda, made headlines at that time after revealing that he was in the process of building his own grave with the appearance and status that he desired.
He also disclosed that he was not only constructing his grave but also planning to make his own coffin for his final journey.
Now, the latest information is that Mzee Sabasita has finally received his coffin from the carpenters who have been working on it for the past six months.
According to reports on Wasafi TV, after receiving his coffin, Mzee Sabasita pleased with the craftsmanship that took over six months. He mentioned that now, all he is waiting for is his death.
“I am really happy. Today is a very joyous day for me. This day is different for me because I have received what I told the people; after building the grave, now I am waiting for the coffin,” said the retired police officer.
“The coffin is beautiful, and I am happy about it. I paid three million, but I got something whose quality matches the money I paid. Now, I am just waiting for death,” he added.
Initially, he estimated that his grave would cost seven million, but he mentioned that with advice from various people, improvements have been made. Up to now, the grave itself has cost him ten million, and adding the three million for the coffin, the total is thirteen million.
In an interview last year, he defended his decision to prepare for his own funeral, saying that he wanted to avoid the inconvenience he witnessed during the funerals of his late parents, who had nothing.
“I do these things to avoid the inconveniences I saw in 1995 when my parents passed away. Also, to reduce the costs for my family and to make people aware that we are heading towards death. Every day as age increases by one, our remaining days decrease by one,” said Mzee Sabasita at that time.
