MWANAKAMPWE HALTS MINING AT KUSUNKA AREA
Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe has ordered anyone carrying out mining activities at Kusunka in Chitambo to vacate the area this week.
Dr Mwanakampwe notes that the illegal mining activities at the mines, 80 Kilometers from Chitambo BOMA poses
security threat in the area.
ZANIS reports that Dr Mwanakampwe said this when he met Chitambo District Commissioner, Topson Kunda, adding that the death of a health worker whose body was discovered floating at a stream raises a security alarm.
“As such, they should all vacate to ensure that illegal activities do not take precedence,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary, noted that Provincial Minister Mwabashike Nkulukusa last week gave the illegal miners a one week ultimatum to leave the area.
“The ultimatum by the Minister still stands, so no one should be found carrying out mining activities there,” he said.
Dr Mwanakampwe also announced that cases of diarrhea have been reported in the area stating that the situation could lead to a disaster if left unchecked.
“ We need to protect the lives of our people,” he said.
And District Commissioner Topson
Kunda said Chitambo has witnessed an increase in diarrheal cases.
Mr Kunda attributed this to the depleting water levels.
“Most of our people depend on wells but the water is depleting hence the increase in cases of water borne diseases,” stated Mr Kunda.
He however ,said that health facilities in the district have adequate drugs to attend to the increasing diarrheal cases.
