MINING COMPANIES CAUTIONED AGAINST USING CURRENT ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS AS EXCUSE FOR JOB CUTS
As Zambia continues to grapple with prevailing economic challenges, the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers-NUMAW- has cautioned mining companies against using current economic hardships as a justification for laying off workers.
NUMAW National Secretary Steven Mwanga says although most companies are facing challenges due to the economic downturn, mining firms should adhere to legal procedures and engage with worker unions to find mutually acceptable solutions, rather than attempting to unilaterally transferring the burden of the economic hardships onto workers.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Mwanga says union leaders across sectors need to be proactive in ensuring that the rights and interests of workers are well protected, especially during current difficult economic times.
He is calling on government to expedite the implementation of measures that can help address the prevailing economic challenges.
