IMMIGRATION NABS 159, REMOVES 95 AND GETS 72 CONVICTED

The Lusaka Regional Immigration Office, on 10th January 2024, apprehended 55 persons in a clean-up operation conducted in Lusaka’s Chawama, Kamwala South, Chalala, Kalingalinga PHI, and Mtendere.
Those nabbed were 37 Burundians, seven Tanzanians, four Congolese, and two Chinese.
Others were two Rwandese, two Zambians, and one Egyptian.
All suspects are detained pending further screening and possible prosecution.
Similarly, Immigration Headquarters, on 9th January 2024, apprehended 20 suspected prohibited immigrants in a routine clean-up operation conducted in various parts of Lusaka.
Those arrested were nine Chinese nationals, three Congolese Refugees, two Burundian Refugees, and two Zimbabweans.
Others were one Burundian national, one Ghanaian, one Rwandese Refugee, and a Tanzanian.
Most Chinese were nabbed for failing to observe the terms and conditions of their Employment Permits, such as engaging in the wrong occupations and working at the wrong companies or branches.
Meanwhile, all the refugees were apprehended for residing outside Refugee Settlements without authority and engaging in business without Permits.
The rest of the suspects were nabbed for illegal entry and unlawful stay.
The two Lusaka clean-up operations brought the number of persons apprehended for various Immigration Offences countrywide between 9th and 11th January 2024 to 159.
Further, the Kabwe Regional Immigration Office, on 11th January 2024, removed 48 illegal immigrants from the Country after they paid court fines for various immigration offences.
Those removed in the mass removal exercise were 34 Burundians, eight Tanzanians, five Rwandese, and one Ugandan.
The Kabwe mass removal exercise brought the number of removals between 9th and 11th January 2024 to 95.
Furthermore, on 9th January 2024, the Livingstone Regional Immigration Office secured the conviction of a 24-year-old male Gambian Teacher for unlawful stay contrary to section 11(3) of the Immigration and Deportation Act Number 18 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia.
Darboe Buba was intercepted by Immigration Officers on 2nd January 2024 when he attempted to exit the Country at the Kazungula One Stop Border Post (OSBP).
An examination of his passport, which he had presented to an Immigration Officer, revealed that he had overstayed in the Country for over two years, having entered the Country through Kasumbalesa Border Control on 14th September 2021.
On 9th January 2024, the Livingstone Magistrate Court convicted and sentenced him to pay a fine of K 12,000 or nine months of simple imprisonment.
The Livingstone Court outcome brings the number of convictions secured by the Department of Immigration between 9th and 11th January 2024 to 72.
