HH TO BE REMEMBERED AS MOST UNDERPERFORMING AND DISCONNECTED PRESIDENT
By David Sichone
President HH and his entire UPND party—including members and cadres—are increasingly delusional. Sadly, this is a recurring pattern in Zambian politics. We saw the same behavior with UNIP, MMD, and PF: a group of emotionally-driven supporters who refuse to think critically or acknowledge the failures of their leaders. It becomes almost cult-like in nature.
At first, they argued it was too early to judge HH’s presidency during his first and second year. They reminded us that his mandate was for five years. But now, as we draw closer to the end of that term, they’ve changed their tune—they’re calling for ten years.
This is despite HH, while in opposition, confidently declaring that he only needed 14 hours to fix the economy. He assured Zambians that his team of economic managers was ready, armed with formulas, graphs, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations. But now, the gap between words and action is too wide to ignore.
Even HH himself should be honest with the Zambian people and admit that he has failed to deliver. There is little left for him to offer. If he were to step down in 2026 and back a neutral, business-minded successor—someone free from political entanglements and state capture—Zambians might remember him more favorably.
But if he continues down this path, he’s only driving the final nails into his political coffin. He risks being remembered in history as one of Zambia’s most underperforming and disconnected presidents—despite spending a decade in opposition just to get here.
