GBV RELATED DEÀTHS RISE

THE latest Statistics for the fourth quarter of 2023 indicate that 42 people were murdered countrywide in cases involving Gender Based Violence-GBV, an increase by 4 in the same period in 2022.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, notes that the murder incidents are part of the 11,746 reports of GBV recorded in the period under review across the country.

Hamoonga notes that 8,451 of the GBV reports received were criminal in nature, with 3,295 non-criminal cases.

He highlights that 2,730 children fell victim to GBV, with 1,952 being girls, while 778 were boys.

Hamoonga tabulates that 835 cases of Child defilement were recorded, translating to 70.9% of all the sexual reports, in which 728 girls were involved, with 7 instances involving boys.

Meanwhile, 6,808 women and 2,208 men were abused countrywide, with physical abuse the highest form of GBV with 4,804 cases recorded.
