Former Chief Justice to be put to rest on Monday, 8th July 2024
The Former Chief Justice, aged 88 years, died on Sunday, 30th June 2024 at the Coptic Hospital in Lusaka, after an illness.
Hon. Justice Silungwe had a long and illustrious career in the Judiciary spanning decades and was the country’s first indigenous Chief Justice. He also served as Minister for Legal Affairs and Attorney General.

Chief Justice Peter Shivute has paid tribute to former Zambian chief justice Annel Silungwe, who also served as a judge of Namibia’s High Court, following his death.
The Office of the Judiciary in Namibia noted in a statement on Tuesday that Silungwe contributed greatly to the legal community in Namibia, serving as a judge of the High Court of Namibia from 1999 until 2009.
He also served as an acting judge of the High Court and the Supreme Court of Namibia in 1995 and 1996. Silungwe was the first director of the Justice Training Centre (JTC) from 1995 to 1999.
Under his leadership, the JTC gave comprehensive training to law graduates to ensure their successful admission in the legal profession, the judiciary stated.
He also served as the founding chairperson of the Magistrates Commission, to which he was appointed in June 2003.
