Opposition People’s Alliance for Change leader Andyford Banda says in the absence of radical land reforms, it is impossible for Zambia to achieve the 10 million metric tonnes production of maize.

Recently, President Hakainde Hichilema said the current maize production level of about 3.3-million metric tonnes is too low, hence his administration has 10-million metric tonnes as the target this year.

However, in an interview with Phoenix News, Mr Banda said without substantive changes in land policies, realizing such a colossal increase remains an insurmountable challenge.

Mr Banda explains that these comprehensive reforms must address land distribution disparities and facilitate broader citizen participation in agriculture especially women and the youth.
