Staff Sergeant Mike Chibwe of the Zambia Army walked himself into trouble and ended up being detained for roughing up uniformed police officers.

The 39-year-old soldier’s outburst was sparked by a news article on Kalemba about the arrest of his military comrade, Warrant Officer Class 2 Brighton Mubiana, who was taken into custody just over the weekend for assaulting a traffic officer.

Eye witnesses testified that Chibwe, accompanied by fellow soldiers, including Mubiana, arrived at Kasanda Police Station around 11:20 yesterday to collect a mobile phone left behind by Mubiana.

However, things took a sudden dramatic turn when Chibwe demanded to know how the article about Mubiana’s arrest ended up on Kalemba.

When the police officer, Sergeant Harrison Matanshi of the traffic section refused to provide details, Chibwe’s anger boiled over.

He grabbed the officer and violently shook him, determined to extract answers and when a female officer, Constable Iluya Nakabiana, intervened and tried to reason wity the Chibwe, the soldier turned his anger on her, roughing her up as well.

Utilising home advantage, the police quickly sprang into action, mobilizing to apprehend Chibwe and marched him into custody for disorderly conduct.

On Saturday, Warrant Officer Class 2 Brighton Mubiana of Kohima Barracks was detained for assaulting a traffic officer and tearing his uniform.

For constable Kelvin Chisha of Kabwe Central Police Division traffic section, what started as normal traffic duties of patrolling the District Business District took an unexpected painful detour when him and his colleagues ran into Mubiana.

Upon noticing that Mubiana’s vehicle had no fitness, insurance and road tax, officers decided that his road unworthy vehicle should be taken to Kasanda Police Station.

Constable Chishala was then instructed by his superior to jump on Mubiana’s vehicle and lead him to the Police Station.

Surprisingly, Mubiana had other intentions.

When the police officer was in the vehicle, the soldier u-turned and started to speed in the direction of Kohima Barracks where he would enlist his colleagues to deal with the officer.

But lucky for the cop, his comrades in the police vehicle gave a chase and intercepted the soldering at the traffic lights.

After seeing that there was no way he was going to land at the barrack with the constable, the officer took matters into his own hands.

He enrolled the officer to a painful slap, kick and punch session that left him in tears and mucus and his uniform in ripped tatters.

It took the help of the CCPU members and other police officers to rescue the vulnerable constable from the military hands of Mubiana and took him to the hospital where he was prescribed the strongest painkillers to be found in hospital pharmacy.

The Army Officer was then arrested and taken to the police station for assault with police vowing to prosecute the suspect.
