The Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba says Petauke Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel Jay Banda denied the charges Zambia Police slapped on him and told INTERPOL National Central Bureaus (NCB) Harare, Zimbabwe that he was being targeted due to his family ties with former president Edgar Lungu.

Mr Musamba disclosed in a statement that on 6th November this year, INTERPOL NCB Lusaka office received communication from INTERPOL NCB Harare, Zimbabwe, seeking confirmation of information regarding Mr Banda’s status as a wanted person.

The Police IG stated that INTERPOL NCB Harare also requested a Provisional Warrant of Arrest should the information prove accurate, adding that INTERPOL NCB Lusaka promptly verified and confirmed that Mr Banda was indeed wanted in Zambia.

Mr Musamba also said that later the same day, INTERPOL NCB Harare submitted Mr Banda’s photograph, requesting identification and confirmation.

“On 8th November 2024, INTERPOL NCB Lusaka transmitted the Provisional Warrant of Arrest to INTERPOL NCB Harare via the secure I-24/7 INTERPOL Communication System,” he stated.

“The receipt of this document was acknowledged by INTERPOL NCB Harare, who subsequently advised that the original Warrant of Arrest be forwarded through diplomatic channels. On 12th November 2024, the original Warrant of Arrest was transmitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for onward delivery to Zimbabwe.”

Mr Musamba said on 19th this month, Mr Timothy Chimutanga, the Deputy Officer in Charge at INTERPOL NCB Harare, informed INTERPOL NCB Lusaka that Mr Banda was in their custody.

He added that Mr Chimutanga requested the expedited preparation of extradition documents through diplomatic channels, adding that Mr Chimutanga revealed that during a preliminary interview, Mr Banda denied the charges.
