Zambia’s judiciary, once a beacon of hope for justice and fairness, has been transformed into a weapon of tyranny under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration. The recent denials of bail pending appeal for opposition figures like Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, Bowman Lusambo, and others are glaring examples of a government hell-bent on silencing dissent.
This is not about justice; it is about political revenge. The judiciary, under the shadow of executive interference, now serves as a tool to crush opponents and keep critics locked away, stripped of their constitutional rights. What we are witnessing is the systematic destruction of Zambia’s democratic foundations.
Hichilema, who once cried foul over persecution, has become the very monster he once opposed. His administration hides behind the guise of fighting corruption while using the courts to lock away anyone who dares challenge his regime. This is hypocrisy at its peak—justice for some, but chains for others.
The judiciary’s complicity is alarming. Denying bail, even when appeals are pending, is a gross violation of fairness. The courts have turned a blind eye to established principles, abandoning their duty to protect the rights of all citizens. This is no longer a democracy; it is a dictatorship masquerading as reform.
Zambians must rise and demand better. Today it is political opponents; tomorrow, it will be ordinary citizens. Power is fleeting, and those who abuse it are destined to fall. Hichilema and his allies must remember: the people are watching, and their patience is not infinite.
Justice must be impartial, not a tool for vendettas. Zambia deserves better than a government that preaches reform but practices tyranny. The clock is ticking, and history will judge this betrayal harshly.
