Brian Baloyi: Kaizer Motaung Sr cost me the opportunity to join Liverpool

Brian Baloyi: Kaizer Motaung Sr cost me the opportunity to join Liverpool.

Kaizer Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi shared how he missed a potential move to Liverpool during his prime in the late 1990s. After a strong performance at the 1998 AFCON and representing South Africa in the FIFA World Cup, Liverpool showed interest in having him join their training.

However, Kaizer Chiefs chairman, Kaizer Motaung, insisted that Liverpool must buy Baloyi outright rather than allowing him to train and possibly impress the club. Despite discussions, Motaung’s firm stance meant Baloyi missed the opportunity to train with the English Premier League giants.

Baloyi expressed disappointment, recalling that Liverpool’s interest was serious, but Chiefs’ refusal to allow a trial ended the potential move. A similar situation occurred with Copenhagen, where Motaung once again demanded the club purchase him outright instead of offering a training period.
