CAF INTRODUCES WHITE CARD

CAF INTRODUCES WHITE CARD

By Virginia Chilongo

The Confederation of African Football have introduced a ‘White Card’ in addition to the already established yellow and red cards.

The white card has been put in place to promote Fair Play among teams.

The pilot project will take off in the U15 CAF African Schools Championship/COSAFA Qualifer to take place in Walvis Bay, Namibia from 11th to 13th October, 2024.

Players, Coaches and Spectators can receive a white card from officials.

Each white card will contribute towards the Fair Play score at the end of the qualifiers.

CAF have set fourteen instances that warrant a white card, one of them being ‘…assisting the referee in controlling the match.”

All Southern African countries except Botswana and Mozambique are expected to participate in the 3-day tournament.

Unlike in previous years, both the Boys’ and Girls’ competitions will be played on full pitches and with 11 per side.

Matches will last 40 minutes, two periods of 20 minutes separated by a 10-minute break, with unlimited substitutions.

All squad members must be used in all the group matches so that each player is given an opportunity to play.

The teams will be split into two pools, each containing four teams where they will play each other in a round-robin format and will earn three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss.

The top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinals, however, there will be no third-place play-off this year.
