UPND CAMPAIGN TEAM MEMBER SAYS HH DECLARED HIS ASSETS IN 2021
A member of President Hakainde Hichilema’s UPND presidential campaign team has disclosed that the Head of State had declared his assets in 2021 while seeking the Republican Presidency. This information has not been made public before, and even the President’s defenders have not openly discussed the extent of his personal wealth.
The Zambian public has long been eager to know just how wealthy President Hichilema is, as he is widely regarded as one of the wealthiest men in Southern Africa. However, this information has never been in the public domain, leaving many questions unanswered.
According to UPND campaign team member Beene Hachoombwa, the Electoral Process Act of 2016 clearly requires any individual seeking the office of President to declare their assets and liabilities in full. Hachoombwa claims that President Hichilema has complied with this legal requirement, but the details of his declaration have not been made public.
This revelation has sparked renewed interest in the President’s personal wealth, with many wondering just how extensive his holdings are. Musa Mwenye, the former Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), has also weighed in on the matter, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in public office.
Mwenye, who voluntarily declared his own assets upon leaving his position, has called on all those in public office to follow suit. He has expressed disappointment that the current government has been selective in its pursuit of corruption, failing to investigate and prosecute officials from past regimes as well as those in the current administration who have “betrayed the trust of the Zambian people.”
The lack of transparency around President Hichilema’s wealth has raised eyebrows, and the public is eagerly awaiting more details on the extent of his assets and liabilities. As the country continues its fight against corruption, the president’s asset declaration could provide crucial insights into the financial dealings of one of the region’s wealthiest individuals.
