Hichilema pledges to work with Catholic church
PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says Government has no choice but to work with the Catholic church being the largest in the world.
Speaking when the Zambia Council for Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) called on him at State House today, President Hichilema stated that there’s need for the church to work with Government in alleviating climate change effects.
He reiterated that the Catholic church has for centuries delivered support to the vulnerable in the country.
“The drought which has instigated a serious blow on economy. It has brought about energy insecurity and food insecurity.
“When we shut down energy, we shut down the economy so there’s need to work together especially in this year more than ever before and the church, the body of Christ. Catholic church being the largest church, I think there’s no choice for us to work together,” he stated.
The President added that Government is aware that the Catholic church has gained skills for years in delivering support to the vulnerable.
“The church has small christian communities, the church has structures that really need to come on board to increase resilience to invest in water harvest,” he said.
Meanwhile ZCCB president Archbishop Ignatius Chama of the archdiocese of Kasama thanked President Hichilema for inviting the church to discuss matters concerning the nation.
