BRIEFING | Jay Jay Banda Captured, Awaits Formal Arrest — Police
Former Petauke Central MP Emmanuel Jay Jay Banda has been deported to Zambia and is awaiting formal arrest and charges, according to Zambia Police spokesperson Chipo Kaitisha.
The development follows days of speculation over Banda’s whereabouts after opposition figures, including former diplomat Emmanuel Mwamba, claimed he had been captured in Mozambique on Wednesday evening.
Kaitisha said police would release further details about the case.
Banda had been on the run since escaping lawful custody in 2024 while facing charges including aggravated robbery and attempted murder.
On Wednesday, Zimbabwean police confirmed they were working with Zambian authorities to locate five wanted individuals, including Banda, in an operation targeting cross-border crime.
The reported deportation marks a significant development in a case that has dominated political discussions and opposition broadcasts since Wednesday.
Banda continued making allegations against President Hakainde Hichilema and other public figures during his time abroad. Whether those broadcasts will result in additional charges remains unclear.
Police have yet to explain the circumstances of his return, including the role of Mozambican authorities.
