HICHILEMA’S 3RD TERM? ATTORNEY GENERAL SAYS CHANGE OF CONSTITUTION IS COMING
As key members of the ruling UPND continue to push for President Hakainde Hichilema’s third term bid in 2031, Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha has confirmed a major constitution review is underway.
President Hichilema started his second and final presidential term on September 1, 2026, but a number of UPND members and their surrogates have insisted that the Republican President will contest the 2031 election, a move that will be against provisions of the constitution.
Recently, UPND Special Assistant in the Office of the Secretary and Mobilization, Michael Chuzu, ‘explained’ that President Hichilema is merely completing the term of the party’s late founder, Anderson Mazoka, and his ‘own first term’ will begin in 2031.
According to Kabesha, the government will follow the due process required by law as the country prepares for major constitutional reforms.
Kabesha told Phoenix FM News that the reform process will not be dictated by political commentary, assuring the public that Zambians will have an opportunity to participate in determining the direction of the proposed amendments.
Kabesha says there is no need for members of the public to fear that the constitutional reform process will be unjust.
He says the government is ready to listen to the views of Zambians on the proposed constitutional changes and will take into account the views of elected representatives speaking on behalf of the people
Kabesha further says political statements from both the ruling and opposition parties should not be allowed to create unnecessary fear or uncertainty around the reform process
