EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CONDEMNS POST-ELECTION REPRESSION IN ZAMBIA

The European Parliament has condemned the murder of Zambian opposition figure and former government minister Mutotwe Kafwaya and called for independent and impartial investigations into the killing.
In a resolution adopted on Thursday, Members of the European Parliament have also expressed concern over what they described as an upsurge in political repression following the August 2026 elections in Zambia
The resolution has called on Zambian authorities to investigate allegations of the illegal use of force, arbitrary arrests and intimidation.
The European Parliament has further denounced what it described as the misuse of Zambia’s national security laws and criminal justice system, stressing that security operations must be proportionate and conducted in accordance with the rule of law
MEPs has also called on the Zambian authorities to guarantee freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly and association.
The resolution has further stated that detainees must be informed of the reasons for their arrest and the charges against them, while being granted access to a lawyer and a fair trial.
The European Parliament has also called on the European Union and its member states to raise the alleged violations at the highest political level, closely monitor the situation and judicial proceedings, and support civil society organisations, human rights defenders and journalists in Zambia.
The resolution was adopted by 562 votes in favour, one against and 33 abstentions.
