The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has suspended the counting and announcement of election results across the country following reports of violence targeting polling staff and the theft of marked ballot papers.
Lusaka, 14 August – In a press release issued on Friday, 14 August 2026, ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said the decision had been taken in response to the deteriorating security situation in some districts.
The Commission said the violence had occurred during the counting and announcement of results, with polling staff among those targeted.
“In some instances, [the violence] has resulted in the theft of marked ballot papers in ballot boxes,” the Commission said.

The ECZ said the continued threats of violence had made it necessary to immediately halt the counting and announcement of results nationwide.
The suspension has been made in accordance with Section 67(3) of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016.
The Commission said it would review the suspension within 24 hours, meaning the country will have to wait for further guidance before the counting and announcement process resumes.
The announcement comes as election officials continue the crucial process of counting ballots cast in the 2026 general election, with results from polling stations and constituencies being compiled and announced.
The ECZ did not identify the districts where the reported violence occurred or provide details of those responsible.
The Commission urged stakeholders and the public to respect the electoral process as it assesses the security situation.
The suspension is expected to temporarily halt the release of further official results while the ECZ and security authorities address the reported threats to election officials and the integrity of election materials.
