Mainga Is Almost 60, I Can’t Control What He Does — Dr Vernon Mwaanga

There are those moments when someone suddenly takes over social media. A video is shared, comments start pouring in, pages post alerts about what is happening and before long, almost everyone is talking about the same person, the same video and the same story.
For some people, it lasts a day or two. For others, going viral seems to be a recurring event. What comes to mind when you hear the name Mainga Mwaanga? For some, it may bring memories of broken relationships.
If you have heard the name Mainga Mwaanga, then you probably know he is no stranger to the social media spotlight. It seems hardly a year goes by without his name trending for one reason or another.
And when Mainga trends, even his family is rarely spared from the noise. Veteran politician Dr Vernon Mwaanga, Mainga’s father, shared that whenever his son starts trending, people are quick to call him or send him videos of Mainga on WhatsApp, eager to show him what his son is up to.
Speaking on the Kenny T 1 on 1 podcast, Dr Mwaanga acknowledged that his son is an adult and that, ultimately, he cannot control the choices he makes.
“Mainga is 59 years old, I cannot control his life. He controls his own life. If that is the life he has chosen, so be it,” he said.
Dr Mwaanga said he has repeatedly spoken to Mainga about his lifestyle, reminding him that at his age, he should be using his experience to guide the younger generation.
“When I meet Mainga, I always tell him, ‘What you’re doing is very wrong. At your age, you should be giving advice to your young brothers,’” he said.
