Tshala Muana wanted us to get married, but I couldn’t marry her because she was a musician — Vernon Mwaanga
Veteran Zambian politician Dr Vernon Mwaanga has revealed that the late Congolese music icon Tshala Muana wanted the two of them to get married, but he ultimately decided against marriage because of their careers.
Lusaka, 8 August – The revelation sheds new light on a relationship that, for years, attracted public attention across Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tshala Muana, widely known as the Queen of Mutuashi, was one of the most prominent Congolese musicians of her generation. Her music, distinctive dance style and performances earned her a large following across Africa.
Dr Mwaanga, meanwhile, was a prominent figure in Zambian politics and diplomacy, having held several senior positions during his long public career.
The two were romantically involved and, according to Dr Mwaanga, Tshala Muana hoped their relationship would eventually lead to marriage.
But despite their relationship, marriage did not take place.
Speaking on the Kenny T 1 on 1 Podcast, Dr Mwaanga said he could not marry Tshala Muana because of the differences between their professions and the demands associated with their public lives.
He explained that Tshala Muana’s career as a musician and his own position as a politician made the prospect of marriage complicated.
The relationship was nevertheless significant, with Tshala Muana reportedly travelling to Zambia to spend time with Dr Mwaanga.
Her death left behind a legacy that extended beyond music, with the celebrated performer remembered for popularising Mutuashi music and becoming one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s most recognisable female artists.
Dr Mwaanga’s account offers a personal perspective on a relationship that had remained a subject of interest among those who followed both their careers.
The veteran politician discussed the relationship and other aspects of his life during his appearance on the Kenny T 1 on 1 Podcast.
