SEOM HEAD OF MISSION ARRIVES IN LUSAKA TO COMMENCE ELECTION OBSERVATION ACTIVITIES
The Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, His Excellency President Arthur Peter Mutharika of the Republic of Malawi, has appointed Honourable Samuel B. Tembenu, SC, Former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Republic of Malawi, as the Head of the SADC Election Observation Mission (SEOM) to the Republic of Zambia’s General Elections scheduled for 13 August 2026.
Hon. Tembenu arrived in Lusaka, Zambia, today on 4 August 2026 to commence his responsibilities as Head of the SADC Election Observation Mission ahead of the country’s General Elections.
On 5 August 2026, Hon. Tembenu will officiate at the Certificate Award Ceremony for Short-Term Election Observers following the successful completion of their pre-deployment training. The observers, drawn from SADC Member States, will thereafter be deployed across Zambia to observe the electoral process in accordance with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.
The Head of Mission will officially launch the SADC Election Observation Mission (SEOM) on 6 August 2026, marking the commencement of the Mission’s observation activities.
Following the 13 August 2026 General Elections, Hon. Tembenu will present the SEOM Preliminary Statement on 15 August 2026, outlining the Mission’s initial assessment of the electoral process.
