UNZA students are furious — and some are threatening to withdraw their votes from President Hichilema over accommodation allowances.

Breaking News ‼️: UNZA students are furious — and some are threatening to withdraw their votes from President Hichilema over accommodation allowances.

Here’s what’s happening: When students signed their contracts with HELSB, the portal clearly showed an accommodation allowance of K5,850. Non-GRZ sponsored students pay the full K5,850 out of pocket. But now HELSB and the Ministry of Education say the budget only covers K3,900 — the same rate as last year — and the higher figure was never approved or budgeted for.

Students are asking: why show K5,850 on the official HELSB portal if it was never budgeted for?

Last year students accepted K3,900 because the policy was new. This year they’re not having it.

The mood on campus is tense:

– Some students are openly saying “if they give us K3,900, we’re voting for Mundubile”
– Others are calling for “roadside”— a protest
– Students are tagging president Hakainde Hichilema directly, questioning the Ministry of Education and HELSB’s trustworthiness
– The contradiction between what the portal shows and what government pays is being called a broken promise.
– Others saying it’s a breach of contract.
– Others are even criticizing Unzasu members for going to Mwense to campaign for UPND members instead of fighting for the students.
UNZASU Ridgeway Campus has confirmed it is still engaging the Ministry of Education and HELSB for a better outcome.

With August 13 just weeks away, this is a story the government cannot afford to ignore. 🇿🇲
