FODEP CONCERNED OVER HIGH NUMBER OF UNOPPOSED CANDIDATES IN AUGUST POLLS
The Foundation for Democratic Process -FODEP- has expressed concern over the high number of candidates contesting unopposed in the august general election, with 176 councilor candidates set to assume office without facing any competition.
FODEP Executive Director Elijah Rubvuta said democracy thrives on broad participation and effective representation, adding that citizens should have meaningful choices when electing their leaders.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Rubvuta said the absence of electoral competition in many wards undermines the spirit of democratic governance and has called for more flexible policies and laws that encourage greater citizen participation in elective positions.
He said the legal and political environment should make it easier for eligible citizens to contest elections rather than creating barriers that discourage participation.
Mr. Rubvuta also challenged political parties to strengthen their presence in communities by fielding candidates at all levels and providing clear policy alternatives that resonate with the aspirations of the electorate.
According to the Electoral Commission of Zambia, 6 mayoral candidates, 7 parliamentary candidates, and 176 councilor candidates have gone through unopposed in the forthcoming August election.
