Outpouring of grief in Ndola after young professional succumbs to depression

Ndola netizens have expressed shock at the death of a young professional who is said to have succumbed to depression in very unclear circumstances.

According to an online Lubuto Community News, Margret Mwaziona Phiri lost her battle against depression while people are calling for investment in mental health issues arising mostly from societal pressures.

“The growing number of young adults in Zambia losing their lives as a result of depression is deeply worrying. It is a clear reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health. Let us foster a society where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness. Together, we can save lives by listening, supporting one another, and promoting access to mental health services. The conversation on mental health cannot wait. The time to act is now. Fare thee well, Margaret Mwaziona Phiri,” the post read in part.

Friends and relatives reacted to the post:

Barbara Sikota: “Mental health is real and it’s unfortunate that some people take it as just being mentally ill when in actual sense it’s more than that hence need for more education and funding.”

Robbin Mchinzi: Very sad. Mental health is a very important topic. That’s why we have introduced the Kabushi Mentorship group where we discuss different topics. Last time we had Lisa K Francis and Grace Mukata Agaba who delivered sessions on mental health on Kabushi Mentorship. This topic is so critical to everyone and as we speak many need therapy in the area of mental health.”

Robbin Mchinzi The bad economy is causing this… When you have money. Depression goes

Mental Health Awareness: “We need to have a serious conversation about mental health. Far too many people are suffering in silence, battling depression, anxiety, stress, and other mental health challenges without the support they need. Every life lost is a painful reminder that mental health deserves the same attention as physical health.

Let us create safe spaces where people can speak openly without fear of judgment or stigma. Let us check on our friends, family members, colleagues, and neighbours. A simple conversation, a listening ear, or a kind gesture can make a meaningful difference.”

Elizabeth Ndumbah: “’Mental health is a very serious fast killer….society dont care, you open up to people about what you going through, you become the topic, some take advantage 💔 of your situation coz you opened up etc… I learnt to control my emotions by taking a bottle and chat with people I don’t know, laugh and joke with them…..life is meaningless do what makes you happy not what makes other people happy.”
