FIFA World Cup 2026: “I Think We Did Enough to Win the Match” – Vozinha Says After Loss to Argentina

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha believes his side deserved more from their dramatic FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against Argentina, despite suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 extra-time defeat

According to FIFA.com, the tournament debutants pushed the defending champions to their limits in Miami, producing one of the most spirited performances of the competition before eventually bowing out.

Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead in the first half, but Cape Verde responded with determination, drawing level to force the match into extra time.

The holders eventually secured victory when an unfortunate own goal in the 111th minute proved decisive.

Reflecting on the narrow defeat, Vozinha expressed pride in his team’s performance and insisted they matched Argentina throughout the contest.

“I think we did enough to win the match,” Vozinha told FIFA after the game.

“Unfortunately, that’s football. Argentina scored the third goal from a set piece, but we went toe to toe with the holders.

“We have enormous respect for Messi and every Argentina player. Once we step onto the pitch, while we know the quality of our opponents, we have to focus on ourselves and our own game.”

Although Cape Verde’s World Cup journey came to an end, the African nation left a lasting impression by reaching the knockout stage in their first-ever appearance at the tournament.

Their courageous display against the reigning champions further highlighted their rapid rise on the international stage and earned widespread admiration despite the defeat.
