KABWE – It was laughter, cheers and political drama in Kabwe this afternoon after opposition leader Brian Mundubile assured President Hakainde Hichilema that he should not be afraid of losing this year’s elections because a comfortable retirement package is already waiting for him..
Speaking before a lively crowd at a public rally, Mundubile jokingly told President Hichilema that Zambia currently lacks a former president and that he is prepared to solve that problem after the August elections.
“HH, don’t be scared when you lose elections to me. I will respect you as a former Head of State. I will take care of you,” Mundubile declared, drawing laughter and applause from supporters.
The opposition leader went on to describe how he would treat the President once he leaves office, saying he would regard him as an elder brother and ensure he enjoys all the privileges deserving of a former Head of State.
In one of the rally’s most humorous moments, Mundubile promised that whenever HH needed to travel for meetings after retirement, he would provide him with an aircraft.
“Whenever you are going for meetings, don’t worry. I will make sure there is a plane available for you,” he said as supporters erupted into cheers and laughter.
The remarks added a light-hearted touch to an otherwise heated political atmosphere, with supporters from both sides already debating whether the statement was confidence, comedy or a campaign promise made a little too early.
As the political season gains momentum, Zambians are increasingly being treated to rallies filled with bold declarations, sharp attacks and humorous exchanges. But for now, Mundubile’s promise of a presidential retirement package complete with respect, care and a plane has become one of the most talked-about moments from the Kabwe rally.
Whether it was political confidence or campaign comedy, one thing is certain – Kabwe got a rally to remember.
