Displaced Foreign Nationals in South Africa Choose Community Re-Integration, Deputy Minister Says

Some foreign nationals displaced by anti-migrant tensions in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province have chosen to return to the communities where they previously lived, according to Home Affairs Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza.

Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on Sunday, Nzuza said the government had offered displaced migrants the option of reintegrating into their communities following recent unrest in Durban.

The briefing was held by members of South Africa’s Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration after reports that several foreign nationals fled their homes last month amid alleged intimidation linked to protests against undocumented migrants.

Many of those affected sought refuge in temporary camps established after the unrest.
Nzuza said authorities informed the
displaced individuals that police protection could not be provided on an individual basis, emphasizing that the South African Police Service is responsible for the safety of all residents.

He added that those unwilling to return to their communities would have been transferred to the Lindela Repatriation Centre. However, he confirmed that none of the displaced foreign nationals chose that option.

The developments come as South Africa continues to grapple with migration-related tensions and concerns over undocumented immigration, particularly in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
