NCP ENDORSES PRESIDENT HICHILEMA AHEAD OF AUGUST ELECTION

The New Congress Party (NCP) has endorsed President Hakainde Hichilema as its preferred candidate for the General Election on 13 August.

NCP President Mr Peter Chanda said the decision followed extensive consultations with party supporters, well-wishers, and members of the public, alongside a careful assessment of the country’s current political environment.

Speaking at a press briefing at the party secretariat in Lusaka today, Mr Chanda explained that the NCP had reviewed the manifestos and policy positions of various political players. While some contained promising ideas, he said, others failed to offer sufficient assurance for the country’s future.

He was candid about the state of the opposition, noting that efforts to build a united front have been undermined by mistrust, personal interests, and divisions among its leaders. The sineer number of presidential aspirants, he added, reflects just how difficult forging that unity has proven to be.

Mr Chanda said the party had also assessed the performance of the United Party for National Development (UPND) government. While some campaign promises remain ongoing, he acknowledged that many had already been fulfilled, a record that helped inform the NCP’s decision to throw its weight behind the President.

The endorsement adds further momentum to President Hichilema’s campaign as the country prepares to head to the polls, and signals a growing willingness among some political players to coalesce around a shared vision for Zambia’s continued stability and development.
