NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TO DISSOLVE AHEAD OF THE AUGUST 13 GENERAL ELECTIONS

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TO DISSOLVE AHEAD OF THE AUGUST 13 GENERAL ELECTIONS

IN less than 24 hours, the fifth session of the 13th National Assembly, which adjourned sine die on Tuesday, will automatically be dissolved, ahead of the August 13, general elections.

This is because tomorrow, May 15, 2026, marks exactly 90 days before Zambia goes to the polls, as dictated by the Constitution.

Article 81 (3) of the Constitution of Zambia provides that “Parliament shall stand dissolved ninety days before the holding of the next general elections”.

Furthermore, Article 56 (1) of the Constitution prescribes the date for the holding of a general election to be held every five years after the last general election, on the second Thursday of August, which will fall on 13th.

“Accordingly, ninety days before that date is Friday [today], 15th May, 2026. In view of the foregoing, Parliament shall stand dissolved by operation of law on Friday, 15th May, 2026,” acting clerk of the national assembly Loveness Mayaka said in a statement.
