THE JUDICIARY SAYS THE CHIEF JUSTICE HAS NOT RESIGNED

Zambia’s Judiciary has found itself at the forefront of the claims concerning the resignation of His Lordship, the Hon Chief Justice Dr Mumba Malila, SC.

The allegations suggested that his resignation was precipitated by a disagreement over the passage of over 70 Bills by Parliament.

The Judiciary unequivocally refuted these claims saying that the statement was fake – with a forged signature and a format inconsistent with official communications from the Chief Justice’s chambers.

The fabricated story also contained a speculative element, questioning whether the Chief Justice had rescinded his decision after the life package promised to his office that will be passed into law this week.

This insinuation introduced a cynical motive, suggesting that the resignation was a bargaining chip related to the perceived benefits for the office of the Chief Justice.

Many people believe that the Chief Justice is the quietest in the history of the judiciary, which makes his role less noticeable.

Though the true measure of a Chief Justice’s success is not the volume of their voice, but the lasting quality of their judicial legacy and their ability to preserve the judiciary’s critical role in a democratic society, he falls short in both.
