MUNIR ZULU TAKES THE FIGHT TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT—ILLEGALITIES, IMMUNITY VIOLATION CHALLENGED

LUSAKA – In a bold and decisive move, outspoken Lumezi Member of Parliament, Hon. Munir Zulu MP, has launched legal proceedings in the Constitutional Court of Zambia to challenge what he calls “illegalities, human rights violations, and a blatant disregard for parliamentary immunity.”

Zulu, known for his relentless approach to national issues, has filed a petition questioning the constitutionality of criminal proceedings brought against him under case CRMP/C/009/2023. According to documents filed in court, Zulu argues that his arrest and subsequent prosecution by the Zambia Police Service violate Articles 76(1) and (2) of the Constitution, which grant Members of Parliament immunity over statements made in the House.

His affidavit, stamped and lodged on April 3, 2025, further states that the Chief Resident Magistrate’s ruling on April 2, 2025, refusing to stay the proceedings, was unconstitutional and should be set aside. Zulu is demanding that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) immediately halts all legal actions against him and that he be forthwith discharged of any criminal libel allegations.

Zulu’s legal challenge, spearheaded by Hon. Joseph Chirwa, signals his determination to expose what he calls a systematic attempt to silence and intimidate him.

“I have commenced legal proceedings at the Constitutional Court challenging illegalities, the infringement of my human rights, as well as the violation of my parliamentary immunity as prescribed by law. Having been advised properly by my counsel, Hon. Joseph Chirwa, I have taken this decision to the highest court in Zambia. I remain MZ.”

With this move, all eyes now turn to the Constitutional Court, where the battle for parliamentary immunity, constitutional rights, and the rule of law is set to play out in yet another high-stakes legal showdown.
