During Women’s Day celebrations in Kasama last week, President Hakainde Hichilema disclosed that the constitution needed to be amended to allow women and youth participation in higher leadership roles.

However, this did not sit well with the opposition and other stakeholders who accused government of trying to manipulate the constitution for their own personal gain.

But government later clarified thlat there constitutional amendment was for the benefit of all Zambians and no one wanted to change it to benefit themselves.

Yesterday, Hamasaka who appeared on Hot FM confirmed that the draft of the constitutional amendment was almost ready and the text would soon be released.

He said the Ministry of Justice had been consulting different stakeholders such as the church and traditional leaders on the amendment and the response had been positive.

“They sat and the draft was agreed, debated and now what is happening is just the process of publishing the actual text, once one or two issues are tied up. There has been quite some consultations going on by the Ministry of Justice, they have been meeting various stakeholders and they are going to continue, so those are some of the things that are being consulted up to now.”

“I’m hoping that we could have the actual text of the same from the Ministry of Justice. As you know they are the ones who are in the process. They maybe even today or tomorrow, they could release some comprehensive statement or probably next week, otherwise the actual text will come out soon even in the government gazette, to be gazetted,” he said.

Hamasaka further explained that consultations were still ongoing and no one will be left out of the consultation process.
